The Music of David Byrne & Talking Heads - Carnegie Hall, New York 3/23/2015

The annual Music Of benefit concert this year paid tribute to the music of the Talking Heads and David Byrne. Each year the Music Of concerts benefit music education for underprivileged youths.
It was only fitting that that the first performers were Little Kids Rock, a group of school aged musicians.
Antibalas acted as the house band for the night and backed most of the performers. Each act was introduced with a brief bio and in most cases the name of the song they were performing.
David Byrne made an appearance at the end of the night performing with the Brooklyn United Marching Band.
On a few occasions, artists shared the stage in what seemed like pretty spontaneous moments: Glenn Hansard & Jherek Bischoff adding backing vocals and Alexis Krauss holding signs with lyrics on Once in a Lifetime;Billy Gibbons adding a guitar solo on a Million Miles Away.
As with most shows where multiple acts follow each other, there were a few technical glitches, but in all the show was very tight and well paced, with the performers truly seeming to have a great time.
  Here is the setlist.

Stay Up Late - Little Kids Rock
I Zimbra - Cibo Matto w/ Nels Cline from Wilco
             Crosseyed & Painless - Antibalas
Road to Nowhere - Esperanza Spalding
             Here Lies Love - Jade
Life During Wartime - Alexis Kraus w/Joel Kraus on backing vocals
Girls on My Mind - Forro in the Dark
             Heaven - Peter Molinari
A Million Miles Away - Steve Earle w/Billy F. Gibbons
Hearts a Lonely Hunter - Thievery Corporation
Houses in Motion - Billy F. Gibbons
             Loco D'Amour - Bebel Gilberto
This Must Be the Place(Naive Medley) - Joseph Arthur
Once in a Lifetime - Amanda Palmer w/Glen Hansard, Jherek Bischoff, Alexis Kraus
Girlfriend is Better - Glen Hansard & Jherek Bischoff
Born Under Punches - The Roots & Donn T
             And She Was - O.A.R.
             Psycho Killer - Sharon Jones
Burning Down the House - Santigold
Take Me to the River - CeeLo Green

Light of Day 15 - Paramount Theatre-1/17/2015

The annual U.S. edition of Light of Day had it's centerpiece show on Saturday 1/17/2015 at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park New Jersey. The entire day, and weekend was filled with shows being held all around the city to raise funds and awareness for Parkinsons Disease.
This years show brought back many of the regular acts from previous years; Willie Nile, Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers, Garland Jeffreys, John Eddie, Joe D'Urso & Stone Caravan, James Maddock Band, Peter Elkas, Rob Dye, Christine Martucci, John Easdale & Peter Wood of Dramarama, and also many new performers, at least to the Paramount stage; The Billy Hector Band, Pat Dinizio of the Smithereens, Willims Honor, Dawg Whistle, Guy Davis, La Bamba's Big Band.
This years show was notable for many reasons. Dawg Whistle featured Vini Lopez & Paul Whistler, two veterans of the Jersey music scene, Williams Honor features Gordon Brown of Mr. Reality/Highway 9, which reunited during their set, LaBamba's Big Band featured many of alumni of the Asbury Jukes such as Bobby Bandiera, Richie La Bamba, Mark Pender, Joe Belia & Stan Harrison and was fronted for much of the set by Southside Johnny.
Brazilian guitarist Daniel Marques was on the stage as the doors were opened and played for roughly 30 minutes.
And for the eleventh time in the fifteen Light of Day centerpiece shows, Bruce Springsteen appeared throughout the night culminating in a full set with Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers featuring Ed Manion on saxophome.
This year, Bruce was more talkative and reflective and nostalgic that in years past. It was one of the loosest performance I have ever seen from him. However, anything I write will not be as good as the many articles that I am sure will be written about this always unique and special event.
For a more full history if the event, you can see any of my earlier posts regarding the annual event.
